Naples capped a perfect 15-0 season Friday with a 17-10 win over St. Augustine to win Florida 3A high school football championship.

The game came down to the fourth quarter and was decided on the play of both team's special teams. First, St. Augustine misfired on a punt in its own territory that resulted in a Naples safety and cut St. Augustine's lead to 10-9 with 9:03 to play in the game. Then, thanks to a 58-yard return by Antwain Harvey off St. Augustine's free kick, Naples was able to score the winning touchdown on a 34-yard run by junior running back Greg Pratt.

The title was the first for Naples since 2001.

Trip to State Final...Not So Far For Two Orlando Area Teams

By Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

Boone and Osceola won't have very far to travel for their Florida high school football championship games this weekend in Orlando. That's because both schools are from the Orlando area.

Boone will play Miami Northwestern, the nation's #1 team according to USA Today, for the 6A title, while Kissimmee Osceola plays St. Thomas Aquinas from Fort Lauderdale for the 5A championship.

St. Thomas Aquinas will be playing in its 11th state title game since 1991. The Raiders won state titles in 1992, 1997 and 1999 and have finished runner-up in the last three 5A title games to Lakeland.

Osceola running back Kwamaine "Bubba" Brown will have a chance to make state history. Brown needs three TDs Friday to break the state's single-season touchdown record of 42, which is currently held by Antone Smith (Pahokee) and Sean Taylor (Miami Gulliver Prep), the NFL safety who died from a gunshot wound November 26th during a robbery attempt at his home.

Top 100 All-Time Florida High School Football Greats

By Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

As Florida readies for its final two weeks of the state's 100th year of high school football, the Florida High School Athletic Association is celebrating with a look back at the greatest teams, players and coaches.

On Tuesday, the FHSAA revealed its top 100 players and the list reads like a who's who list with five NFL Hall of Famers topping the list. The Canton inductees on the FHSAA Top 100 Players are: Ted Hendrickson (Hialeah HS), Michael Irvin (St. Thomas Aquinas HS),Deacon Jones (Hungerford HS), Larry Little (Washington HS) and Jack Youngblood (Jefferson County HS).

The list was compiled from nominations submitted by media representatives from around the state. Final selections were made by a panel of high school sports experts, who spent more than 20 hours spread over 10 conference calls, and scores of emails, discussing and deliberating these and at least 100 other players who received serious consideration.

“There were no right or wrong choices in this process,” said FHSAA Associate Executive Director Jack Watford. “There were only opinions. Well-informed opinions, mind you, but opinions nonetheless. Get a dozen groups of high school football fans together around the state to pick such a list, and they’ll probably all come up with 25 or 30 common names. Beyond that, it’s anybody’s guess as to who they’ll come with. And the great thing about is, that absolutely none of them will be wrong.”

In the next week, the FHSAA will also announce the coaching staff of the All-Century team and Coach of the Century, the Teams of the Century and the All-Century team.

#20 Lakeland Needs Overtime To Set New Florida High School Football Win Streak

Lakeland needed two overtimes Friday night to beat Ridge Community 22-19, but the extra quarters didn't diminish the accomplishment of the Dreadnaughts, who can now claim Florida's longest win streak at 53 straight wins.

Actually for three quarters it looked like Ridge, which is playing only its third year of varsity football, controlled everything Lakeland (8-0) tried to do. Ridge owned a 10-0 third quarter lead and held the Dreadnaughts to only 51-yards of total offense.

In the fourth quarter, Lakeland stormed back with 74-yards for a field goal, an on-side kick and then a 40-yard touchdown run by T.K. Lamb to send the game into overtime.

Ridge also had chances to win it in the first overtime. Lakeland scored first to take a 16-10 lead, but a missed extra point let the door open for Ridge. Ridge scored in OT, but also missed the extra point so the game went to a second overtime.

After Ridge grabbed the lead back on a second OT field goal, Lakeland quarterback Jarred Haggins tossed a 6-yard touchdown pass to James Campbell for the win.

#1 Northwestern Wins Battle of Miami

Over 22,000 fans turned out to watch Northwestern extend its win streak to 23-game with a 24-12 win over crosstown rival Central. Both teams entered the game undefeated, and both will enter the post-season, with a possible second match-up possible.

Once again Northwestern, the #1 team in the USA Today Super 25, was led by quarterback Jacory Harris, who completed 14 of 23 passes of 198 yards and two touchdowns.

Top Ranked Northwestern Pushes Win Streak to 22 Games

Northwestern will get a second big test of the season next week when it takes-on undefeated Central. However, before that 7-0 vs. 7-0 game could be played, the Bulls had to disposed of a district foe American Friday night...and they did just that with a 36-12 win.

Northwestern used a solid ground game to push its win streak to 22-games. The Bulls gained 212-yards on the ground, while the defense came-up with five sacks and forced fumbles. Quarterback Jacory Harris was very efficient completing 11 of 17 passes for 176 yards and two scores.

Northwestern will play Central next Saturday in the Orange Bowl.

Top-Ranked Northwestern Air It Out In Win Over Hialeah-Miami Lakes

Northwestern (Miami, FL) quarterback Jacory Harris was on fire Saturday, throwing six touchdown passes to lead the Bulls to a 63-0 rout of Hialeah-Miami Lakes.

What made Harris' performance so impressive was the fact that he did it in a little over two quarters of work. Harris, who now has 23 TD passes this year, was 10-for-13 for 200 yards. Five different players caught the scoring passes.

Harris is on pace to possibly break the Florida single-season touchdown pass record of 48 set by Robert Marve of Tampa Plant High School. At his current pace, Harris would shatter the record by tossing 58 scores.

While Harris gets the headline, the Northwestern defense was outstanding. The Bulls "D" limited Hiaheah-Miami Lakes to minus-18 yards of total offense, including minus-20 yards rushing.

#12 Booker T. Washington Cruises To 5-0 Start

It only took Booker T. Washington (Miami, FL) a half of football to dispose of Edison Friday night. The Tornadoes (5-0) crushed Edison 41-0 behind quarterback Torrance Moise , who ran for two scores and tossed two touchdown passes. At the half Booker T. Washington held a 38-0 lead.

#1 Southlake Carroll (TX) Vs. #2 Northwestern (FL) Preview

Whether I agree with national rankings or not, two of the most talented high school football programs will collide in a nationally televised showdown on ESPN on Saturday. Southlake Carroll will carry the flag for the state of Texas as it takes on Florida's Northwestern High.

Southlake Carroll will be going for a 5A schools record of 50 straight wins. To read a preview from the Dallas News, please click on our headline "#1 Southlake Carroll Vs. #2 Northwestern Preview".

#2 Northwestern Wins, But Barely In Preparation For Showdown With #1 Southlake Carroll (TX)

For the first time since 2005 Northwestern trailed an opponent at halftime, but in the end the Bulls were able to rebound an pull-out a 28-18 win over Homestead on Friday night.

Maybe Northwestern was caught looking ahead to next week's showdown with #1 Southlake Carroll, but either way Homestead did a great job taking a 9-0 first quarter lead, and then a 15-14 lead into the lockerroom. Northwestern committed six turnovers to hamper its cause.

To read a complete game wrap from the Miami Herald, please click on our headline "#2 Northwestern Wins, But Barely In Preparation For Showdown With #1 Southlake Carroll".

Booker T. Washington (FL) Takes Down Summerville (SC) In Battle of Nationally Ranked Teams

One thing that ESPN should learn...yes high school football is great, but made-for-TV match-ups just don't usually pan out in this sport.

Take Saturday's yawner between Summerville (SC) and Booker T. Washington (Miami). Both teams should be very good this year and both have great tradition, but that didn't translate to the little screen yesterday as Booker T. crushed the Green Wave 36-3.

What the nationally TV audience did see was a Tornado offense that should wreak havoc throughout Florida this fall. BTW rolled-up 473 yards in offense, averaging 9.7 yards per play.
